When to go
April–June and September–October are the pleasant sweet spots. July–August is hot (Baku's wind helps; the lowlands don't). Winter is mild in Baku, snowy in the Caucasus foothills.
Money & getting around
Azerbaijan uses the manat (AZN). Cards work in Baku; carry cash beyond it. Most visitors need an e-visa — the official ASAN portal issues them in about 3 days; don't pay a middleman site more. Tipping ~10% is customary in restaurants.

The ASAN e-visa
Most visitors to Azerbaijan need an e-visa, and the official ASAN portal issues them in about three days — third-party sites just charge more for the same thing. Check the entry guide for what applies to a US passport and start it well before 20 October.

Cash in manat
Cards work fine in Baku, but anything beyond the city runs on manat, and a week is long enough to leave the capital. Plan how you'll get cash, and keep roughly 10% handy for restaurant tips.

A windproof layer
Baku is called the windy city for a reason, and late October is mild but exposed. Pack layers and one jacket that blocks wind, plus something smart-casual for the city — none of that is on your list yet.
