Questions, answered straight

What it costs, where your documents live, which emails you'll get, and why we send you to official sources instead of copying them. If something you need isn't here, ask us — a real human replies.

Getting started

Do I need an account to use it?

No. Type where you're headed and you get the full readiness checklist immediately — packing, weather, entry rules, advisories, crowds, the lot. Nothing is hidden behind a signup wall.

A free account is worth having for one reason: your trips then follow you between your phone and your laptop, and you get the countdown reminders before you fly.

What does it cost?

The checklist is free forever. A $19 Trip Pass adds a cloud document vault, an offline copy of the checklist, and multi-traveler checks for one trip. Traveler Annual is $39 a year and covers every trip you take.

Which destinations are covered?

97 countries and regions, each with the cities travelers actually search for — so "Dublin", "Dublin, Ireland", or just "Ireland" all land in the right place. Nineteen passport nationalities are supported for entry and visa answers, with the US, UK, Canada, and New Zealand covered in the most depth.

More get added regularly, and the list grows from what travelers actually ask for — so if somewhere you're headed isn't there yet, send us a message at hello@triphappenstravel.com and we'll add it.

Is there an app to install?

TripHappens installs straight from your browser — no app store, no update to forget. On iPhone, tap Share then "Add to Home Screen"; on Android, your browser will offer to install it. It then opens like any other app, full screen, with its own icon.

Does it work without signal?

The app itself opens offline — the shell, your checklist, and everything you've already ticked are stored on your device, not fetched fresh each time. Live pieces like the weather forecast and link health checks need a connection to update.

If you want the whole trip — official links, entry rules and all — saved deliberately for a flight or a country with expensive data, that's the offline pack, included with Trip Pass and Traveler Annual.

Membership and billing

What exactly do I get for paying?

Three things, all of which only matter once a trip is genuinely happening. An encrypted cloud vault, so your passport scan is reachable from any device you sign into rather than trapped on one phone. An offline pack, so the full checklist and its official links are downloaded before you lose signal. And "Traveling with", which checks entry rules and passport expiry for everyone on the trip, not just you — a mixed-nationality group sees each person's requirements separately.

Trip Pass or Traveler Annual — which one?

If you have one big trip this year, buy the Trip Pass for that trip. If you take more than two trips a year, Annual costs less than two passes and covers everything, unlimited.

Nothing upgrades you automatically, and buying a pass never signs you up for anything recurring.

Does a Trip Pass expire?

No. It stays attached to the trip you bought it for, before, during, and after. It just doesn't carry over to a different trip — that's what Annual is for.

I bought a Trip Pass and now I want Annual. Do I pay twice?

No. If you bought a Trip Pass within the last 14 days and haven't subscribed before, what you paid for it comes off your first year of Traveler Annual automatically — you'll see the discount on the Stripe checkout page before you pay anything.

It applies once, to your first Annual subscription, and only inside that 14-day window. There's no code to enter and nothing to ask us for.

How do I cancel?

Open the account menu and choose "Manage billing" — that opens Stripe's own billing portal, where you can cancel Traveler Annual yourself in a couple of clicks. No email to write, no one to talk out of it. You keep access until the year you've paid for runs out.

A Trip Pass is a one-off purchase, so there's nothing to cancel.

Is my card safe?

Payment goes directly to Stripe, which handles card details for a very large share of the internet. Your full card number never touches our servers — we only ever hear back that a payment succeeded.

Your documents and your data

Where do my passport scans and tickets actually live?

By default, only on your device, in your browser's own storage. They're never uploaded, we can't read them, and clearing your browser data deletes them.

If you have a Trip Pass or Annual, you can additionally choose to back a document up to the cloud vault — that's an explicit tap per file, never automatic. Those files sit in a private, encrypted store and are only ever handed back to you through a short-lived, single-use link created at the moment you download.

Can you see my documents?

No. On-device documents never leave your device at all. Vault documents live in a private bucket where only your own signed-in account can reach your own folder, served exclusively through expiring signed links. There is no browsing interface on our end, and "Remove" deletes the actual file, not just the listing.

What happens if I clear my browser or lose my phone?

Anything stored only on that device — your on-device documents especially — goes with it. If you're signed in, your trips and checklists are mirrored to your account and come straight back when you sign in somewhere else. Documents you backed up to the cloud vault come back too.

This is the honest reason a free account is worth thirty seconds of your time.

What's a resume link?

A link that carries your whole trip inside the address itself, so you can open your checklist on another device with no account at all. Treat it like a boarding pass: anyone you send it to can open that checklist. Documents stored on your device don't travel with it.

Do you track me or sell my data?

No analytics trackers and no advertising scripts run in this app, and we have never sold data to anyone. You can ask for a copy of everything we hold on you, or ask us to delete all of it, any time, for any reason.

Alerts and email

What emails will I actually get?

Two kinds, both tied to a trip you saved. If your destination's official travel advisory changes, you get told — that one is free for everyone, account or not, because it's a safety matter and we won't put safety behind a login. And if you have a free account, you get countdown reminders at 14, 7, 3 and 1 days out, with the last one framed as a final packing check.

That's it. No drip sequence, no re-engagement campaign.

Why do countdown reminders need an account when advisory alerts don't?

Because a countdown reminder is a convenience and an advisory change is a safety warning. Gating the safety one behind a signup would be indefensible, so we didn't. The reminders need an account so they can follow you across devices and so we know the address belongs to you.

How do I stop the emails?

Every single one has a one-click unsubscribe link. Saving that trip again re-subscribes you, and you can ask us to delete your data outright at any point.

Is there a separate marketing list?

There's an optional travel deals and tips list, offered as an unticked checkbox when you save a trip and kept entirely separate from your trip alerts. You're only on it if you tick that box yourself, and it has its own unsubscribe link. We never move addresses from one list to the other.

Accuracy and sources

Why do you link to official sites instead of showing the rules here?

Because entry rules and advisories change without notice, and a copy of a rule is out of date the moment the source updates. Republishing government content would mean confidently telling you something wrong at exactly the moment it matters most.

So TripHappens does the part that's genuinely hard — working out which official pages apply to your passport and your destination, and checking those links are still alive — then sends you to the real thing. The live source is always the source of truth.

Can I rely on the visa answer?

Treat it as a strong steer, not a ruling. For passport and destination combinations we're confident about, you get a direct answer with a note. For everything else the app says so plainly rather than guessing, and points you at your own government's page. Always confirm at the official source before you book.

How accurate is the weather?

Within about 15 days of your trip it's a real forecast. Further out, it's the average of the last three years for those dates — the vibe, not a promise. The app tells you which one you're looking at, and the packing list adapts to it either way.

Do you earn commission on links?

On some of them, yes, and they're marked where they appear. It never changes what you pay. Commercial links only ever sit on the everyday cards — packing, money, crowds, local quirks — and never on the safety-critical ones. Entry rules, advisories, health, and safety stay commercially untouched, deliberately and permanently.

Teams and businesses

Can I cover a team, a client roster, or a retreat group?

Yes. Team plans start at $99 a month for up to 10 seats, then $9 per seat per month after that. They're set up through a conversation rather than a checkout, so seats and reporting get scoped around how your group actually travels before anything is billed.

What's a Stack Check?

A free call that walks your existing travel stack end to end — booking, approvals, documents, duty of care — and points out where it leaks. It's useful whether or not you end up buying anything from us, which is rather the point.
