What to pack
The Bahamas is 700 islands of swimming-pool water. Pack proper sun defence, reef-friendly swim kit, and something breezy for evenings — island nice, not island lazy.
Reef-safe sunscreen and a sun shirt
The sun off white sand and clear water hits twice; a rash guard saves your back on snorkel days.
Water shoes
Rocky flats, conch shells, and the odd urchin — worth the tiny suitcase space.
A light cover-up for town
Swimwear is for the beach; Nassau shops and restaurants expect a layer over it.
Cash in small bills
Water-taxi docks, beach shacks, and conch stands prefer small notes.
When to go
December–April is peak: dry, breezy, priciest — and spring break (Mar) turns Nassau up loud. May–June is the quiet sweet spot. Hurricane season runs June–November; September–October is its heart — travel insurance weather.
Money & getting around
The Bahamian dollar (BSD) is pegged 1:1 to the US dollar, and USD is accepted everywhere interchangeably — no exchange needed for Americans. Cards work in Nassau and resorts; the out islands prefer cash. Tipping is US-style, ~15%; many bills add gratuity automatically, so check before doubling it.

Bahamian dollars equal US dollars
One to one and used interchangeably; you will get change in either. No need to exchange.
Tipping is added
Fifteen percent gratuity is usually on the bill. Check before you add more; VAT is also on top of listed prices.
Sunday is for church and closed shops
Nassau's downtown mostly shuts. Cruise ships still dock, so the straw market may open; nothing else guarantees it.
Out Islands mean planning
Mail boats and small planes run to their own timetable. Book the ferry to the Exumas ahead and take cash; ATMs are few.
Conch is the food
Cracked, in salad, in fritters, at a shack by the water. Arawak Cay in Nassau is where the locals eat it.
