Visitors are usually admitted for 30 days at the officer's discretion
Visitors are usually admitted for 30 days at the officer's discretion; longer stays, up to 6 months, are granted by extension in-country.
- US passport valid for your whole stay (six months' validity is the safe habit; some airlines enforce it at check-in even where the country doesn't)
- Proof of onward or return travel — a booking on your phone is enough
- Where you're staying and proof you can fund the stay, if asked

What to pack
The Cayman Islands are calm water, big fish and bigger prices. Pack snorkel gear if you own it, something smart for Seven Mile Beach's restaurants, and your patience for the exchange rate.
Your own mask and snorkel
Stingray City, the reefs off Seven Mile Beach and the wreck of the Kittiwake are the point of the trip. Rental masks leak; yours will not.
Reef-safe sunscreen
Shallow sandbars and long hours in the water. Mineral formulas, reapplied after every swim.
Water shoes
Ironshore, the sharp fossilised coral along much of the coast, cuts feet. Sandy Seven Mile Beach is the exception.
One smart-casual outfit
Grand Cayman's restaurant scene is dressier than most islands; collared shirts and sundresses are the evening norm.
When to go
December to April is peak, when George Town also takes cruise ships several days a week and Stingray City gets crowded by mid-morning; book the early boat. Pirates Week in November is a local festival worth planning around. Hurricane season runs June to November; May, June and early December are the quieter, cheaper windows.
Money & getting around
The Cayman dollar (KYD) is fixed at 1.25 US dollars, and prices are often shown in both; US dollars are accepted everywhere, but change comes in Cayman dollars and the rounding rarely favours you. Cards work almost everywhere. Tipping is 15 percent, but most restaurants add a service charge of 10 to 15 percent, so check before doubling it. Public buses are colour-coded minibuses that run along the main roads; rental cars drive on the left.
Local quirks worth knowing
Grand Cayman is a British overseas territory with an American accent and Swiss prices. It runs on politeness and rules, both easy to keep.
Drive on the left
Roundabouts go clockwise and the rental car's steering wheel is probably on the right. Take the first drive slowly.
No alcohol sales on Sunday
Shops cannot sell liquor on Sundays; bars and restaurants still serve. Buy the bottle on Saturday.
Swimwear is for the beach
Walking into a shop or restaurant in a bikini or shirtless is frowned on, and topless sunbathing is illegal everywhere.
Greet before you ask
A good morning to the bus driver, the shop assistant, the person you are about to ask for directions. It is noticed when it is missing.
Do not touch the stingrays' wings
At Stingray City, hands flat, no grabbing, and the guides mean it. The rays are wild animals that tolerate you for the squid.
