Visa-free up to 90 days
Up to 90 days in any 180-day period, counted across every Schengen country together, not per country.
- US passport issued within the last 10 years and valid at least 3 months beyond the day you leave the Schengen Area
- Proof of onward or return travel — a booking on your phone is enough
- Where you're staying — a hotel confirmation or your host's address; officers can ask
- ETIAS (the EU's online pre-travel authorization) once it's live for your dates: tied to your passport, expected to start in late 2026. Check the official ETIAS site before you fly

What to pack
Croatia is Adriatic coast, walled old towns, and island ferries. Pack light summer clothes, water shoes for pebbly beaches, and comfortable shoes for a lot of historic stone.
Water shoes
Many gorgeous beaches are pebbly or rocky, not sandy — water shoes save your feet.
Comfortable walking shoes
Old towns like Dubrovnik and Split are all polished stone and steps.
Sun protection and a swimsuit
Strong Adriatic sun and irresistible swimming from late spring.
A light layer for ferries and evenings
Sea breezes cool the evenings and open-deck ferry rides.
When to go
July–August is peak: hot, busy, and priciest, with Dubrovnik and Split crowded (and cruise-ship surges). May–June and September are the sweet spot — warm sea, open everything, fewer people.
Money & getting around
Croatia switched to the euro (€) in 2023, so no more kuna. Cards are widely accepted; carry some cash for small islands, markets, and ferries. Tipping is modest — round up or ~10% for good service. Coastal travel runs on ferries and catamarans; book ahead in summer.

Coffee is a sitting sport
Locals nurse one macchiato for two hours and nobody blinks. Takeaway culture barely exists — sit down, slow down.
FKK means what you think
Beaches marked FKK are naturist. Know the acronym before you wander onto one — or into one, depending on your holiday.
Loungers cost, rocks are free
Organized beaches charge for umbrellas and beds; the free spots are beautiful but stony (the water shoes earn their keep).
Konoba = the good stuff
Family-run taverns, often seasonal hours and sometimes cash-only. Where the actual Croatian food lives.

ETIAS before you fly
The entry guide says ETIAS is expected to start late 2026, which is exactly when your trip falls. Check the official ETIAS site closer to departure to see whether your dates need one.

Layers, not beach kit
Croatia's packing reputation is coast and water shoes, but you're inland in Zagreb in late October. Pack warm layers and a rain-ready jacket, plus shoes that handle wet cobblestone.

A day's worth in carry-on
You've got a checked bag and an arrival where biometrics can slow the border down. Keep medication, chargers and one change of clothes on you in case the bag lags behind.
