Trip readiness checklist for Fiji

Every destination has its quirks — greetings, queueing, meal times, what's rude and what's required. Here's the trip-readiness checklist for Fiji: what to pack, when to go, entry rules for your passport, and the official sources to confirm before you fly.

What to pack

Fiji is islands, reefs, and genuine warmth ('bula!'). Pack reef and beach gear, sun protection, and modest cover for visiting villages.

When to go

The dry season (May–Oct) is the pleasant, peak time — cooler, less humid, sunniest. The wet season (Nov–Apr) is hotter and overlaps cyclone season. Australian/NZ school holidays spike crowds.

Money & getting around

Fiji uses the Fijian dollar (FJD). Cards work at resorts and in towns; carry cash for villages, markets, and small islands. Tipping isn't traditional, though resorts often have a shared 'Christmas fund' tip box. Island transfers are by boat or small plane.

Local quirks worth knowing

Every destination has its quirks — greetings, queueing, meal times, what's rude and what's required. A five-minute read on Fiji's local customs before you land pays for itself all trip.

What am I forgetting?

A real answer from TripHappens for a sample week in Fiji, departing in five weeks with a checked bag and nothing packed yet. Yours is built from your own trip.

Five weeks out, bag booked, nothing packed. Let's fix three things.

  1. 1.

    Reef gear and a sulu

A week in Nadi in late October means sun, reefs, and probably a village visit, and your packing list stops at everyday shoes. Add sun protection, something you can swim and snorkel in, and a light wrap or long shorts for covered shoulders and knees on village days.

  2. 2.

    Fijian dollars in small notes

Cards are fine at resorts and in Nadi, but villages, markets and the small islands run on cash. Pull FJD early and keep small notes on you rather than hunting an ATM on a boat day.

  3. 3.

Confirm US entry rules for Fiji

You're travelling on a US passport and nothing about entry has been checked yet. Read the official entry guidance for Fiji, and while you're at it, look at your passport's expiry date and that the name on it matches your ticket.

Entry, advisories & health

Safety-critical — always confirm live at the official source before you book.
