Hot and humid year-round; breathable, quick-dry fabrics win.
A sarong and modest cover
Temples require covered legs (and often a sash); a sarong doubles as beach and temple wear.
Strong sun and insect protection
Equatorial sun is fierce; mosquitoes are a real consideration, especially at dusk.
Reef-safe swimwear and water shoes
Beaches, reefs, and waterfalls everywhere; some are rocky.
When to go
The dry season (roughly Apr–Oct) is the pleasant, peak time, especially in Bali; July–Aug and the Christmas/New Year stretch are busiest and priciest. The wet season brings warm afternoon downpours and lower prices.
Money & getting around
Indonesia uses the rupiah (IDR) — lots of zeros, so count carefully. Cash is essential outside cities and resorts; ATMs are common but dispense large notes. Cards work at hotels and bigger spots. Tipping isn't expected, but rounding up is kind. Stick to bottled water.

The small flower-filled baskets (canang sari) on Bali's sidewalks are daily temple offerings. Step around them, always.
Right hand for giving and receiving
Money, gifts, business cards — the left hand alone reads as disrespectful.
The head is sacred
Never touch anyone's head, including children's, however friendly the moment.
Nyepi stops everything
Bali's Day of Silence (usually March) closes the entire island for 24 hours — including the airport, beaches, and your hotel's front door. Check your dates; plan to be still.
