Trip readiness checklist for Ireland

What to pack

Irish weather doesn't do small talk — it just rains, then clears, then rains again. Pack for all of it and the rest of the trip stays smooth.

• A waterproof jacket you actually like

  Irish rain is less dramatic downpour, more persistent mist that shows up most days. A packable rain shell beats an umbrella — the wind will turn an umbrella inside out by lunch.

• Layers, even in summer

  Summer highs sit in the high teens Celsius (mid-60s F). Bring a warm layer for the evenings and a lighter one for midday — you'll likely use both in the same afternoon.

• Comfortable, broken-in walking shoes

  Cobblestones, coastal paths, and a fair bit of standing around. Waterproof if you can manage it.

• A Type-G plug adapter

  Ireland uses the three-pin Type G socket at 230V. Your US chargers will need an adapter (and most laptop/phone bricks handle the voltage fine).

When to go

Peak season is roughly June–August (warmest, busiest, priciest); the shoulder months (May, September) trade some weather risk for fewer crowds — a trade worth making.

Money & getting around

Ireland's on the euro (€), and plastic works just about everywhere — even the pub in the middle of nowhere. Tipping's relaxed: round up or ~10% for good service, no mental gymnastics required. In Dublin, a Leap Card lets you hop the buses, Luas, and DART without ever fishing for change.

Local quirks worth knowing

Ireland's real attraction is the conversation. Learn the rhythm of the pub and the meaning of 'grand', and you're most of the way local.

• Rounds are law

  If someone buys you a pint, you're in the rotation and expected to buy one back. Budget (and pace) accordingly.

• The craic is participatory

  Pub conversation is the national sport, and sitting at the bar signals you're open to it. A corner table signals you're not.

• 'Grand' covers everything

  Fine, okay, no bother, don't worry about it. Context does the rest.

• Rural hours are real

  Outside the cities, shops close early and Sunday hours are short. The scenic detour wins anyway.
