Trip readiness checklist for Israel
Israel runs Sunday-to-Thursday, stops for Shabbat, and communicates at full candor. Here's the trip-readiness checklist for Israel: what to pack, when to go, entry rules for your passport, and the official sources to confirm before you fly.

Israel packs ancient sites, beaches, and desert into a small space. Pack modest cover for holy sites, light layers for the heat, and good shoes — you'll cross millennia on foot.
Modest cover for holy sites
Covered shoulders and knees (and sometimes head covering) are required at the Western Wall, churches, and mosques — men and women alike.
Light, breathable clothing
Hot and sunny much of the year, especially in summer and the desert.
Comfortable walking shoes
Jerusalem's Old City and archaeological sites are steep, stone, and uneven.
Sun protection and a swimsuit
Strong sun; and you'll want to float in the Dead Sea (bring sandals for the sharp salt).
When to go
Spring and autumn are most comfortable. Summer is hot (humid on the coast); the Jewish holidays (around Sept–Oct and Passover) shift hours and prices, and Shabbat (Fri evening–Sat) closes much of the country.
Money & getting around
Israel uses the shekel (ILS). Cards are widely accepted; carry some cash for markets and small vendors. Note that Shabbat (Friday evening to Saturday evening) shuts most shops and public transport — stock up beforehand. Tipping ~10–12% in restaurants.
Local quirks worth knowing
Israel runs Sunday-to-Thursday, stops for Shabbat, and communicates at full candor. None of it is personal; all of it is plannable.
Shabbat reshapes the week
Friday sunset to Saturday night: most shops close, public transport stops in most cities (Haifa partially excepted), and Jerusalem goes properly quiet. Stock up Friday morning; Tel Aviv's restaurants carry on.
Sunday is Monday
The work week is Sunday–Thursday. Museums' 'weekend' hours land on Friday–Saturday — check before you plan.
Directness is the dialect
Israelis skip the pleasantry padding and say the thing. It can feel blunt for a day; then it feels efficient.
Budget real time for airport security
Ben Gurion's questioning is famously thorough and can include your itinerary in detail. Arrive 3 hours early and answer patiently — it's routine, not suspicion.

A week in Jerusalem, five weeks out. Three gaps.
- 1.
A plan for Shabbat
Your week straddles Friday 23 and Saturday 24 October, when most shops and public transport stop from Friday evening to Saturday evening. Book that day around walking distance, and buy food and any transport arrangements before Friday afternoon.
- 2.
Modest cover and real shoes
Jerusalem's holy sites expect covered shoulders and knees, and you'll be crossing stone and hills on foot all week. Add a light scarf or long layer to the bag alongside the everyday shoes already on your list.
- 3.
