What to pack
Latvia is art nouveau, pine forests, and a proper Baltic beach. Pack layers, rain cover, and shoes that can do both boulevards and boardwalks.

When to go
Summer (Jun–Aug) is peak — Jūrmala fills, Riga hums, and Midsummer (Jāņi, late June) is the year's biggest party. Spring and autumn are calm; winter is cold, quiet, and pretty.
Money & getting around
Latvia's on the euro (€); cards work nearly everywhere. Tipping ~5–10% for good service. Riga is walkable; trains reach Jūrmala cheaply, and Bolt (the local Uber) covers the rest.

Do not shake hands in a doorway
An old superstition, still observed: step inside first. Handshakes are firm, eye contact expected.
Riga's central market is the meal
Five old zeppelin hangars of smoked fish, rye bread and pickles. Go before noon, bring a little cash.
Midsummer stops the country
Jāņi, 23 to 24 June, is the national party; shops close, everyone leaves for the countryside, and you should join a bonfire if invited.
Black Balsam is a dare
The herbal liqueur is taken neat, in coffee, or with blackcurrant juice. Start with the juice.
Jūrmala is a train ride
Thirty minutes from Riga to the beach; a car entry fee applies in summer, so the train is also the cheaper way.

ETIAS status for your dates
The entry guide says ETIAS is expected to start in late 2026, which brackets your October trip. Check the official ETIAS site now rather than the week before you fly, and confirm your passport was issued within the last 10 years and stays valid three months past 27 October.

Extra time at the border
The EU's Entry/Exit System photographs and fingerprints non-EU visitors at the first crossing, so arrival can run long. Have your return booking and Riga accommodation address on your phone, since officers can ask for both.

A warm waterproof layer
A late-October week in Riga is squarely off-season, and the local advice is layers, rain cover, and shoes that handle both boulevards and boardwalks. You have a checked bag and twelve items untouched, so start with the coat and the shoes.
