Trip readiness checklist for Lithuania
Every destination has its quirks — greetings, queueing, meal times, what's rude and what's required. Here's the trip-readiness checklist for Lithuania: what to pack, when to go, entry rules for your passport, and the official sources to confirm before you fly.

Visa-free up to 90 days
Up to 90 days in any 180-day period, counted across every Schengen country together, not per country.
- US passport issued within the last 10 years and valid at least 3 months beyond the day you leave the Schengen Area
- Proof of onward or return travel — a booking on your phone is enough
- Where you're staying — a hotel confirmation or your host's address; officers can ask
- ETIAS authorization once it's live for your dates: an online pre-check tied to your passport, expected to start in late 2026. Check the official ETIAS site before you fly

What to pack
Lithuania is baroque churches, lake country, and dunes on a spit of sand. Pack changeable-weather layers and shoes for old-town wandering.
Layers and a rain shell
Four seasons, sometimes in one afternoon — the Baltic standard applies.
Winter kit (Nov–Mar)
Cold and snowy; insulated everything.
Comfortable walking shoes
Vilnius's old town is one of Europe's largest — and cobbled accordingly.
A windbreaker for the coast
The Curonian Spit's dunes are magnificent and breezy; cycling them is the move.
When to go
Summer (Jun–Aug) is peak — Vilnius buzzes and the Curonian Spit books out. Spring and autumn are quiet and lovely; winter is cold, calm, and cheap.
Money & getting around
Lithuania's on the euro (€) and very card-friendly. Tipping ~5–10% for good service. Trains link Vilnius–Kaunas–Klaipėda cheaply; the ferry plus a bike covers the Curonian Spit.
Local quirks worth knowing
Every destination has its quirks — greetings, queueing, meal times, what's rude and what's required. A five-minute read on Lithuania's local customs before you land pays for itself all trip.

A week in Vilnius, five weeks out. Three gaps.
- 1.
ETIAS and your passport dates
ETIAS is expected to start for US travelers in late 2026, which straddles your October dates, and Lithuania is Schengen — your passport must be issued within the last 10 years and valid at least 3 months past 27 October. Check both on the official ETIAS site and against your actual passport before you book anything else around it.
- 2.
Layers and waterproof walking shoes
Late October in Lithuania is the quiet, damp end of autumn, and Vilnius old town is cobbles and long church-to-church walks. Pack layers you can shed indoors and shoes you don't mind getting wet.
- 3.
A carry-on that survives alone
You've got a checked bag and nothing packed yet, and the EU's Entry/Exit System now photographs and fingerprints arrivals, so the border can be slow before you ever see the belt. Keep medication, chargers, your return booking and your hotel address on you, not in the hold.
