Trip readiness checklist for Mauritius

Every destination has its quirks — greetings, queueing, meal times, what's rude and what's required. Here's the trip-readiness checklist for Mauritius: what to pack, when to go, entry rules for your passport, and the official sources to confirm before you fly.

What to pack

Mauritius is reef-ringed lagoons with a Creole-Indian-French soul. Pack beach kit plus one decent outfit — resort dinners dress up a little — and reef-safe sunscreen for the lagoons.

When to go

October–December is prime: warm, dry-ish, before the cyclone window. January–March is hot, humid, and cyclone season (watch forecasts). The mild southern winter (Jun–Sep) is quieter and lovely — pick your coast for wind.

Money & getting around

Mauritius uses the rupee (MUR). Cards are fine in hotels and supermarkets; carry cash for markets, beach vendors, and street food (try the dholl puri before judging). Tipping is appreciated, not demanded. Buses are cheap and slow; taxis negotiate by the trip.

Local quirks worth knowing

Every destination has its quirks — greetings, queueing, meal times, what's rude and what's required. A five-minute read on Mauritius's local customs before you land pays for itself all trip.

What am I forgetting?

A real answer from TripHappens for a sample week in Mauritius, departing in five weeks with a checked bag and nothing packed yet. Yours is built from your own trip.

A week of lagoons, five weeks out, nothing in the bag yet.

  1. 1.

    Your US entry requirements

You're travelling on a US passport to Mauritius and nothing's been checked yet. Read the entry guide and its official source now, while 35 days is still enough time to fix a passport problem.

  2. 2.

    Reef-safe sunscreen, bought early

Mauritius is ringed by lagoons and reef, and reef-safe formulas are easier to find at home than at a resort shop. Buy it before you go, and pack it in the checked bag since it's liquid.

  3. 3.

    One outfit that dresses up

Resort dinners in Mauritius lean a little smart, and beach kit alone won't cover it. Add one decent outfit and shoes to the pack list now, while the bag is still empty.

Entry, advisories & health
