When to go
October–December is prime: warm, dry-ish, before the cyclone window. January–March is hot, humid, and cyclone season (watch forecasts). The mild southern winter (Jun–Sep) is quieter and lovely — pick your coast for wind.
Money & getting around
Mauritius uses the rupee (MUR). Cards are fine in hotels and supermarkets; carry cash for markets, beach vendors, and street food (try the dholl puri before judging). Tipping is appreciated, not demanded. Buses are cheap and slow; taxis negotiate by the trip.

Drive on the left
British rules on French-named roads. Buses are cheap and reach most of the island; taxis quote a fixed price, agreed first.
Shoes off at temples
Leather too, at some Hindu temples; leave belts and leather bags outside. Cover shoulders and knees.
Rupees, and cash for the market
Cards are fine in hotels and Port Louis shops; the central market and beach vendors want rupees in hand.
Sega on Saturday
Hotel shows are fine, but the real sega is on the beach at Flic-en-Flac on a Saturday night. Ask a local which end.
Cyclone season is January to March
Hotels have a plan; follow the flags on the beach and stay off the sea when the warning goes up.
