Trip readiness checklist for Mongolia
Every destination has its quirks — greetings, queueing, meal times, what's rude and what's required. Here's the trip-readiness checklist for Mongolia: what to pack, when to go, entry rules for your passport, and the official sources to confirm before you fly.
Build my free Mongolia checklistWhat to pack
Mongolia is the emptiest, biggest sky you'll ever sleep under. Pack for weather with mood swings — a July day can serve sunburn and frost in the same 24 hours.
Warm layers, even in summer
Steppe nights drop near freezing year-round; a down layer earns its space in any month.
Sun protection
High altitude and zero shade: hat, sunglasses, high-SPF.
Sturdy broken-in boots
Ger camps, riverbanks, and horse stirrups all punish flimsy footwear.
Wet wipes and a headlamp
Ger-camp living is glorious and plumbing-optional; both items become priceless by day two.
When to go
The short summer (Jun–Aug) is the season, peaking at Naadam (mid-July) — the wrestling-horses-archery festival that books Ulaanbaatar solid. September is golden and quieter. Winter is for the genuinely committed (−30°C committed).
Money & getting around
Mongolia uses the tögrög (MNT). Ulaanbaatar takes cards; the countryside runs on cash, full stop — get it before you leave the capital. Tours and drivers are usually arranged (and often paid) in advance. Accept dairy hospitality in gers with your right hand and good humour — fermented mare's milk is an experience, not a punishment.
Local quirks worth knowing
Every destination has its quirks — greetings, queueing, meal times, what's rude and what's required. A five-minute read on Mongolia's local customs before you land pays for itself all trip.

A week in Mongolia in late October. Let's talk warmth.
- 1.
Real cold-weather layers
Your packing list runs to everyday shoes and underwear, and you're arriving in Ulaanbaatar on 20 October, well past the golden September window. Add a proper insulated coat, thermal base layers, hat and gloves — Mongolian days can swing from sun to frost inside 24 hours.
- 2.
Tögrög in cash
Ulaanbaatar takes cards, but the countryside runs on cash only. If you're leaving the capital at any point, draw tögrög before you go, and check whether your tours or driver are already paid in advance.
- 3.
