When to go
Winter (Oct–Mar) is the pleasant, peak season; summer is extremely hot except in southern Salalah, which gets a green monsoon ('khareef', Jun–Sep). Ramadan affects daytime hours.
Money & getting around
Oman uses the rial (OMR), one of the world's highest-value currencies — prices look small but aren't. Carry cash for souks and small towns; cards work in cities and hotels. Tipping is appreciated — round up or ~10%.

Coffee and dates first
Being offered kahwa and dates is the greeting. Accept with the right hand; a small taste is enough, refusing outright is a snub.
Cover shoulders and knees
In towns, souqs and anywhere near a mosque, for everyone. Beach resorts are the exception, and only on the resort's own beach.
Friday is the quiet day
Souqs open late or not at all until afternoon; the Grand Mosque in Muscat admits visitors on weekday mornings only.
Wadis flood fast
A blue sky over you means nothing if it rained in the mountains. Locals leave a wadi the moment the water turns brown; do the same.
Haggle softly
Bargaining in the souq is expected but gentle; a few rounds, a smile, and settle. Fixed-price shops are exactly that.
