Trip readiness checklist for Oman
Every destination has its quirks — greetings, queueing, meal times, what's rude and what's required. Here's the trip-readiness checklist for Oman: what to pack, when to go, entry rules for your passport, and the official sources to confirm before you fly.
Build my free Oman checklistWhat to pack
Oman is dramatic — mountains, wadis, and empty desert, with a relaxed, welcoming culture. Pack modest, breathable layers, sturdy shoes, and gear for both heat and cool nights.
Modest, breathable clothing
Cover shoulders and knees in public and towns; light fabrics handle the heat.
Sturdy shoes and sandals
Wadis, forts, and dunes call for grippy shoes plus sandals for the water.
Layers for cool nights and mountains
The desert and the Hajar mountains get cold after dark.
Strong sun protection and water
Intense sun; carry more water than you think you need.
When to go
Winter (Oct–Mar) is the pleasant, peak season; summer is extremely hot except in southern Salalah, which gets a green monsoon ('khareef', Jun–Sep). Ramadan affects daytime hours.
Money & getting around
Oman uses the rial (OMR), one of the world's highest-value currencies — prices look small but aren't. Carry cash for souks and small towns; cards work in cities and hotels. Tipping is appreciated — round up or ~10%.
Local quirks worth knowing
Every destination has its quirks — greetings, queueing, meal times, what's rude and what's required. A five-minute read on Oman's local customs before you land pays for itself all trip.

A week in Oman, five weeks out. Three quiet gaps.
- 1.
Modest, breathable layers
Seven October nights in Oman mean shoulders and knees covered in public, plus cool desert evenings after hot days. Add a light scarf and long loose trousers to the packing list before the shorts pile wins.
- 2.
Entry rules for a US passport
You've booked flights but haven't checked what Oman asks of US travellers on arrival. Open the entry guide and follow it through to the official Omani source, and confirm your passport's expiry date while you're there.
- 3.
Rial cash for souks
Cards work in Muscat hotels, but souks and small towns run on cash, and the rial's high value makes prices deceptive. Plan where you'll withdraw and keep small notes for tips of around ten percent.
