When to go
The dry season (mid-Dec–mid-Apr) is peak — sunniest and busiest; the green season is wetter, cheaper, and quieter. Carnival (Feb/Mar) is a big, lively draw.
Money & getting around
Panama uses the US dollar (officially the balboa, pegged 1:1 and effectively the dollar) — so for US travelers there's nothing to convert. Carry small bills for taxis and vendors; cards work in cities. Tipping ~10%.

Dollars, with a twist
The balboa is pegged one to one and only exists as coins, which mix freely with US coins. Notes are plain US dollars; break large bills early.
Tipping is ten percent
Restaurants often add it as 'servicio'; check the bill before adding more. Taxis are not tipped.
Agree the taxi fare first
City cabs rarely use meters; name the destination, hear the price, then get in. Ride apps sidestep the whole dance.
Rainy season is an afternoon
May to December it pours around two o'clock, then clears. Plan outdoor things for mornings and carry something waterproof anyway.
The canal has a schedule
The Miraflores visitor centre posts transit times; big ships pass mid-morning and mid-afternoon. Turn up at noon and you will watch water.
