Trip readiness checklist for Rwanda

Every destination has its quirks — greetings, queueing, meal times, what's rude and what's required. Here's the trip-readiness checklist for Rwanda: what to pack, when to go, entry rules for your passport, and the official sources to confirm before you fly.

What to pack

Rwanda is a thousand green hills, gorillas in the mist, and a capital so clean it embarrasses everyone else's. One rule before you pack: plastic bags are illegal here — genuinely, at-the-airport illegal.

When to go

The long dry season (Jun–Sep) is peak for gorilla trekking — permits (from USD 1,500, limited daily) sell out months ahead, so book the permit before the flights. The short dry season (Dec–Feb) is second-best. Wet seasons are green, muddy, and quieter.

Money & getting around

Rwanda uses the franc (RWF). Kigali is surprisingly cashless (mobile money rules); carry some cash outside the capital. Gorilla permits are booked ahead in USD. Moto-taxis are the city workhorse — helmets provided, fares agreed up front.

Local quirks worth knowing

Every destination has its quirks — greetings, queueing, meal times, what's rude and what's required. A five-minute read on Rwanda's local customs before you land pays for itself all trip.

What am I forgetting?

A real answer from TripHappens for a sample week in Rwanda, departing in five weeks with a checked bag and nothing packed yet. Yours is built from your own trip.

Five weeks out, a week in Rwanda. Three gaps stand out.

  1. 1.

    Leave the plastic bags home

Plastic bags are illegal in Rwanda, enforced at the airport, and your toiletries bag hasn't been packed yet. Sort your liquids into fabric or mesh pouches now rather than surrendering them on arrival.

  2. 2.

Your gorilla permit, if you want one

Permits are limited daily, cost from USD 1,500, and are booked well ahead — flights are already booked, so the permit is the piece that decides your week. Confirm or arrange it before you build the rest of the itinerary.

  3. 3.

    US entry rules for Rwanda

Nothing in this trip yet confirms what a US passport needs to enter. Check the entry card and its official source, and while you're there check your passport's expiry date against your 27 October return.

Entry, advisories & health

Safety-critical — always confirm live at the official source before you book.
