Trip readiness checklist for Saint Lucia

Saint Lucia is French in its Creole, British in its driving and entirely itself in pace. Here's the trip-readiness checklist for Saint Lucia: what to pack, when to go, entry rules for your passport, and the official sources to confirm before you fly.

Entry rules for a US passport

Visa-free for tourist stays

Visa-free for tourist stays; 6 weeks is the usual initial period, at the officer's discretion, extendable in-country.

  • US passport valid for your whole stay (six months' validity is the safe habit; some airlines enforce it at check-in even where the country doesn't)
  • Proof of onward or return travel — a booking on your phone is enough
  • Where you're staying, for the arrival form

What to pack

Saint Lucia is steep, green and dramatic: the Pitons, the drive-in volcano and a rainforest that rains. Pack for hiking as well as the beach, and leave the camouflage at home.

  • Real hiking shoes

Gros Piton is a guided four-hour scramble over wet rock; the Tet Paul nature trail and the rainforest walks are muddy. Sandals will not do it.

  • A light rain layer

The west coast sees afternoon showers most of the year, and the interior sees more. Showers pass; being soaked does not.

  • Reef-safe sunscreen and bug spray

Strong sun on the water and mosquitoes at dusk in the valleys. Both, every day.

  • Water shoes

Anse Chastanet's snorkelling, the Sulphur Springs mud baths and the river hikes all go better with covered feet.

When to go

December to April is peak, the Jazz Festival in May and Carnival in July are the island's big weekends, and the Friday-night street party in Gros Islet runs all year. Hurricane season is June to November, with September and October wettest and quietest. May, June and November are warm, cheaper and uncrowded.

Money & getting around

Saint Lucia uses the Eastern Caribbean dollar (XCD), pegged at 2.70 to the US dollar; US dollars are accepted almost everywhere, with change in EC dollars. Cards work at hotels and bigger restaurants; carry cash for buses, markets and beach bars. Tipping is 10 percent, often already added as a service charge. Taxis have fixed rates, so ask the fare first. The airport most flights use (Hewanorra, UVF) is at the south end, about 90 minutes by road from the Rodney Bay resorts, so book the transfer before you land.

Local quirks worth knowing

Saint Lucia is French in its Creole, British in its driving and entirely itself in pace. A few things to know so you do not stand out for the wrong reasons.

  • Camouflage clothing is illegal

Wearing or even carrying camouflage-print clothing is an offence for civilians, enforced at the airport. Leave it at home.

  • Greetings are not optional

A good morning or good afternoon before anything else, to everyone from the shopkeeper to the person at the next bar stool.

  • Drive on the left, slowly

The coast road is a ribbon of hairpins with sheer drops; the Soufrière to Castries run takes far longer than the map suggests. Many visitors hire a driver instead.

  • Friday night is Gros Islet

The whole north of the island goes to the street party for grilled fish, rum and music in the road. Go after nine, stick to the lit streets.

  • The volcano is a mud bath

Sulphur Springs in Soufrière lets you soak in warm volcanic mud. Wear an old swimsuit; the smell and the stain both linger.
