What to pack
Saudi Arabia is newly open to tourists, vast, and conservative. Pack modest, breathable clothing, serious sun protection, and layers for cold desert nights.
Modest clothing
Dress modestly in public — cover shoulders and knees; women no longer need an abaya but should dress conservatively.
Strong sun protection
Desert sun is relentless; hat, sunglasses, high-SPF, and water.

Deserts drop sharply after dark, even when days are scorching.
Comfortable closed shoes
Sand, ruins (AlUla, Diriyah), and cities all mean a lot of walking.
When to go
Winter (Nov–Mar) is the comfortable, peak season; summer is brutally hot inland. Ramadan and the Hajj period significantly affect hours, crowds, and access — check the calendar carefully.
Money & getting around
Saudi Arabia uses the riyal (SAR), pegged to the US dollar. Cards and mobile pay are widely accepted; carry some cash for souqs and small towns. Tipping isn't obligatory but is appreciated. Note the weekend is Friday–Saturday.

Prayer times pause everything
Shops and cafés may close for twenty minutes or so, five times a day. Ask for the times at your hotel and plan errands around them.
No alcohol, anywhere
It is not sold, not served, not brought in. The mocktail menus are genuinely good; make peace with that on the plane.
Coffee is a ceremony
Arabic coffee comes in a small cup, refilled until you gently shake the cup to say enough. Take it with the right hand.
Weekends are Friday and Saturday
Friday morning is quiet as a Sunday dawn; the week starts Sunday. Book museums and tours with that in mind.
Ask before photographing people
Especially women and families. A smile and a gesture toward the camera gets a clear yes or no.

Modest, breathable layers
Riyadh in late October is still hot by day and the desert drops at night, and the dress code leans conservative. Pack loose long-sleeved layers and serious sun protection alongside the underwear and shoes still on your list.

A Friday–Saturday weekend
The Saudi weekend falls on Friday and Saturday, so opening hours and prayer-time closures won't line up with your instincts. Sketch the week's plans around that before you book anything time-sensitive.
