Trip readiness checklist for Singapore
Singapore's famous rules are real, but the one that matters daily is unwritten: the tissue packet on the table means the seat is taken. Here's the trip-readiness checklist for Singapore: what to pack, when to go, entry rules for your passport, and the official sources to confirm before you fly.

Visa-free up to 90 days
Up to 90 days visa-free, at the officer's discretion.
- US passport valid at least 6 months beyond your arrival — Singapore enforces this
- SG Arrival Card, submitted online within 3 days before you arrive; it's free and takes five minutes
- Proof of onward or return travel — a booking on your phone is enough
- Prescription medicines: bring the prescription; some need prior approval from the Health Sciences Authority

What to pack
Singapore is hot, humid, and impeccably organised. Pack light, breathable clothes, an umbrella for sudden downpours, and a light layer for the fierce air conditioning indoors.
Light, breathable clothing
It's hot and humid all year; linen and cotton win.
A compact umbrella
Tropical downpours arrive fast and pass quickly.
A light layer for indoors
Malls, trains, and restaurants are aggressively air-conditioned.
Comfortable walking shoes
The city is walkable, green, and best explored on foot and MRT.
When to go
Singapore is a year-round, just-below-the-equator destination — hot and humid always, with no real seasons. It's busiest and priciest around big events like the F1 night race (Sept) and the year-end holidays.
Money & getting around
Singapore uses the Singapore dollar (SGD) and is almost entirely cashless — cards and mobile pay work everywhere. Tap an EZ-Link/SimplyGo or contactless card for the excellent MRT and buses. Tipping isn't customary; a service charge is usually included.
Local quirks worth knowing
Singapore's famous rules are real, but the one that matters daily is unwritten: the tissue packet on the table means the seat is taken.
The fines are not folklore
No eating or drinking on the MRT, no chewing-gum imports, no jaywalking, no durian on public transport (that one has a sign). Compliance is easy; just do it.
'Chope' the table
At hawker centres, a tissue packet or umbrella on a table means it's reserved. Respect the packet; deploy your own.
Order like a local
'Kopi' is coffee with condensed milk; 'kopi-o' black with sugar; 'kopi-o kosong' black, plain. The uncle appreciates precision.
Tap water is drinkable, tipping is skippable
Both by design — a 10% service charge is already on most bills.

What am I forgetting?
A real answer from TripHappens for a sample week in Singapore, departing in five weeks with a checked bag and nothing packed yet. Yours is built from your own trip.
Five weeks out, a week in the tropics. Three gaps.
- 1.
The SG Arrival Card window
Your entry guide says the free SG Arrival Card must be submitted online within three days before you arrive. Set a reminder for around 17 October, because you can't do it early and get it over with.
- 2.
Medicine approval lead time
The entry guide notes some prescription medicines need prior approval from Singapore's Health Sciences Authority, and vaping products are flatly illegal to bring in. Check your own prescriptions now while 35 days is still plenty of time to apply.
- 3.
An umbrella and a layer
Singapore is hot and humid with sudden downpours, and the indoor air conditioning is fierce — none of which your twelve unpacked items covers. Add a compact umbrella and a light long-sleeve layer to the list alongside the breathable clothes.
