Trip readiness checklist for Slovakia

Slovakia is reserved, punctual and quietly proud of not being the Czech Republic. Here's the trip-readiness checklist for Slovakia: what to pack, when to go, entry rules for your passport, and the official sources to confirm before you fly.

Entry rules for a US passport

Visa-free up to 90 days

Up to 90 days in any 180-day period, counted across every Schengen country together, not per country.

  • US passport issued within the last 10 years and valid at least 3 months beyond the day you leave the Schengen Area
  • Proof of onward or return travel — a booking on your phone is enough
  • Where you're staying — a hotel confirmation or your host's address; officers can ask
  • ETIAS (the EU's online pre-travel authorization) once it's live for your dates: tied to your passport, expected to start in late 2026. Check the official ETIAS site before you fly

Source: U.S. Department of State, checked September 14, 2026. Other passports get their own answer in the app. Confirm at the official source before you book.

What to pack

Slovakia is castles, caves and the High Tatras, with Bratislava an hour from Vienna and half the price. Pack for city cobbles and mountain weather in the same bag.

  • Layers, even in summer

The Tatras sit at 2,000 metres and drop ten degrees between the valley and the ridge; afternoon storms are routine from June to August.

  • Hiking boots with ankle support

Tatra trails are rocky, chained in places and closed from November to mid-June above the huts. Trainers are fine for the castles, not the peaks.

  • A rain shell

Changeable all year, properly wet in May and June. A packable layer beats an umbrella on a ridge.

  • A Type-E/F plug adapter

Two round pins at 230V, as across central Europe.

When to go

June to August is peak in the Tatras and in Bratislava's old town, with the Christmas markets filling December and the ski resorts busy from late December to March. May, September and October are the sweet spot: open trails, golden forests and empty castle courtyards. The high Tatra trails close over winter and reopen in mid-June.

Money & getting around

Slovakia uses the euro (€). Cards work widely in cities; mountain huts, village pubs and small guesthouses are cash. Tipping is about 10 percent, told to the server as you pay rather than left on the table. Trains link Bratislava, the Tatras and Košice cheaply; in Bratislava, buy a tram or bus ticket before boarding and stamp it in the yellow validator, because inspectors do not accept the tourist excuse.

Local quirks worth knowing

Slovakia is reserved, punctual and quietly proud of not being the Czech Republic. Get the name right and the rest is forgiving.

  • It is not Czechoslovakia, and not Slovenia

Both mistakes are made daily and both land badly. Slovakia, since 1993; the capital is Bratislava.

  • Dobrý deň before anything

Good day to the shopkeeper, the bus driver, the waiter. Walking in silent reads as rude, and a greeting in Slovak gets a visibly warmer reply.

  • Stamp the tram ticket

In Bratislava and Košice, buying the ticket is half the job; the yellow box on board validates it. An unstamped ticket is a fine.

  • Shoes off at the door

In every home and most guesthouses. Hosts offer slippers; take them.

  • Mountain huts have house rules

Quiet after ten, boots in the rack, cash only, and the hut keeper's word on the weather is final. The Tatra rescue service charges if you ignore the closures.
