Trip readiness checklist for Spain
Late dinners, siesta-shut shops, and a sun that means business — Spain makes sense the moment you shift your schedule two hours.
Build my free Spain checklistWhat to pack
Spain runs late and warm — dinner at 10pm, sun most of the year. Pack light, breathable layers and something for a night out, because the evening is where Spain actually happens.
Breathable layers
Days are hot, especially inland in summer; evenings cool off. Linen and cotton beat anything synthetic.
Sunglasses and sunscreen
The Spanish sun is no joke from spring through autumn.
Shoulder cover for churches
Cathedrals like Sevilla's and the Sagrada Família expect covered shoulders.
Comfortable walking shoes
Old-town streets are cobbled and made for wandering.
When to go
July–August is peak heat and peak crowds, and inland cities like Seville and Madrid can roast. Spring and early autumn are the sweet spot — warm coast, comfortable cities, and you'll actually get a table.
Money & getting around
Spain's on the euro (€). Cards work widely, but keep some coins for small bars and the odd cash-only spot. Tipping is modest — round up or leave a little for good service. In cities, a rechargeable transit card beats buying single tickets every time.
Local quirks worth knowing
Spain isn't late — you're early. Shift your body clock two hours and the country makes perfect sense.
The schedule runs late
Lunch 2–4pm, dinner 9–11pm. A restaurant full at 7pm is full of tourists.
The afternoon pause is about shops, not naps
Smaller shops close roughly 2–5pm, especially outside the big cities. Time your errands.
The bill won't chase you
Lingering after a meal (sobremesa) is the point. Ask for 'la cuenta' when you're ready — it won't come otherwise.
August empties the cities
Locals head to the coast and some neighborhood spots close entirely. Check before you cross town for that one restaurant.
