Trip readiness checklist for Sri Lanka
Sri Lanka is serendipity with strict rules about one thing: the Buddha is never a prop. Here's the trip-readiness checklist for Sri Lanka: what to pack, when to go, entry rules for your passport, and the official sources to confirm before you fly.

What to pack
Sri Lanka packs beaches, tea hills, temples, and wildlife into one small island. Pack light and quick-dry for the heat, modest cover for temples, and a warm layer for the cool hill country.
Light, quick-dry clothing
Hot and humid on the coast and lowlands; breathable fabrics win.
Modest cover for temples
Covered shoulders and knees are required at temples; you'll also remove shoes and hats.
A warm layer for the hill country
Nuwara Eliya and the tea hills get genuinely cool, especially mornings and evenings.
Insect repellent and sun protection
Mosquitoes and strong sun are both real considerations.
When to go
Two monsoons split the seasons: the west/south coasts and hill country are best Dec–Mar; the east coast is best May–Sep. Peak is the December–March stretch. There's always somewhere sunny.
Money & getting around
Sri Lanka uses the rupee (LKR). Cash is essential outside cities and resorts; carry small notes for tuk-tuks, markets, and temple donations. Cards work at hotels. Agree tuk-tuk fares (or use the PickMe app). Tipping is appreciated — round up or ~10%.
Local quirks worth knowing
Sri Lanka is serendipity with strict rules about one thing: the Buddha is never a prop. Everything else is a warm head-wobble.
Never turn your back on a Buddha
No selfies posing with statues, no photos with your back to one — and visible Buddha tattoos have gotten tourists detained at the airport. This is the serious one.
The head wobble means good things
The side-to-side tilt is yes, okay, and I'm-listening all at once. You'll be doing it yourself within a week.
Temple whites and bare feet
Shoulders and knees covered, shoes and hats off; locals wear white to temple. Sock-friendly tip: temple stone gets scorching by noon.
'Spicy' is calibrated locally
Ask for 'less spicy' and mean it — Sri Lankan home-level heat is an athletic event. The curd and treacle afterwards is the recovery plan.

What am I forgetting?
A real answer from TripHappens for a sample week in Sri Lanka, departing in five weeks with a checked bag and nothing packed yet. Yours is built from your own trip.
Five weeks out, a week in Sri Lanka. Three gaps.
- 1.
Rain that arrives with you
Late October sits in the turn between monsoons, and the west and south coasts are at their wettest outside the December–March window. Pack quick-dry clothes and a light rain layer rather than an umbrella you'll abandon, and check the forecast again a week out.
- 2.
Temple cover and slip-on shoes
Shoulders and knees covered, shoes off at every temple, and the Buddha is never a photo prop or a tattoo you show off. A light scarf and sandals you can kick off in one motion save you buying both at the gate.
- 3.
Entry paperwork for a US passport
Thirty-five days is comfortable for whatever Sri Lanka requires of you, and uncomfortable if you look at it in week four. Open the entry card and follow its official source, and check your passport's expiry date while you're there.
