No camouflage clothing
Illegal for civilians in T&T — it gets confiscated at the airport. Easy rule, easy win.
Light, quick-dry clothing
Hot and humid year-round; rainforest hikes and waterfall swims reward quick-dry fabrics.
Insect repellent
Mosquitoes are enthusiastic, especially in the rainy season and the rainforest.
Carnival kit (if that's the mission)
Comfortable boots you can dance miles in, sun protection, and stamina. Costumes are arranged months ahead.
When to go
Carnival (Feb/Mar) is the peak of peaks — flights and rooms book out nearly a year ahead, and it's worth it. The dry season (Jan–May) is best generally; Tobago stays calm outside local holiday rushes. Hurricanes usually pass north of here.
Money & getting around
T&T uses the TT dollar (TTD). Cards work in cities and hotels; carry cash for street food — doubles at a roadside stand are the national breakfast and the best money you'll spend. Tipping ~10% where service isn't added. Route taxis run fixed roads; agree private fares up front.

Doubles for breakfast
Curried chickpeas between two fried flatbreads from a roadside stand, for pocket change. Ask for 'slight pepper' the first time.
Carnival takes the year
Fetes start in January, the two days before Ash Wednesday are the peak, and hotels sell out months ahead. Everything else pauses.
Maxi taxis by colour
The shared minibuses have colour-coded stripes for their routes. Cheap and constant; ask which colour goes your way.
Liming is the plan
Hanging out with no agenda is a verb and an art form. If you are invited to lime, the answer is yes.
Leatherbacks nest in season
March to August at Grande Riviere and Matura, by permit with a guide, no lights. One of the best nights of your life.

Camouflage clothing is illegal in Trinidad and Tobago, and that includes a stray pair of shorts or a kid's backpack. Pull anything patterned out of the pile before it goes in the checked bag.

Rain gear for late October
You're going in October, outside the January–May dry season, and rainforest walks are part of the appeal. Pack a light rain shell and shoes that dry, not just comfortable everyday ones.

TT dollars in small notes
Cards cover hotels and city restaurants, but doubles from a roadside stand and route taxis run on cash. Sort a small stack of TTD early and agree private taxi fares before you get in.
