What to pack

The UK has four seasons, often in one afternoon. Pack layers and a waterproof you don't mind living in, and you'll out-stoic the locals.

• A proper waterproof jacket

  Rain is less monsoon, more persistent drizzle that arrives without warning. A packable shell beats an umbrella in the wind.

• Layers you can peel

  Heated pubs, chilly streets, and changeable skies mean you'll add and shed layers all day.

• Comfortable walking shoes

  Cities are walkable and old; pavements are uneven and often wet.

• A Type-G plug adapter

  The UK uses the chunky three-pin plug at 230V.

When to go

Summer (Jun–Aug) brings the best weather and the biggest crowds and prices, especially in London and Edinburgh (mind the August festival). Spring and early autumn are calmer, cheaper, and still pleasant — pack for rain either way.

Money & getting around

The UK uses the pound (£), not the euro. Cards and contactless rule — you can tap straight onto London buses and the Tube with your card or phone. Tipping is modest: around 10–12.5% in restaurants if service isn't already added.

Local quirks worth knowing

The UK is easygoing about almost everything, with one exception it takes deadly seriously: the queue.

• The queue is sacred

  Whatever it's for, join the back of it. Jumping it is the one genuinely unforgivable act.

• Stand on the right

  On escalators — especially the London Underground. The left side is for people walking, and they're in a hurry.

• Order at the bar

  Most pubs have no table service: order and pay at the bar. If someone buys a round, buying the next one is strongly implied.

• 'You alright?' is a greeting

  Not a health inquiry. 'Good, you?' is the entire expected answer.
